Laid out in 794 A.D., the palaces and temples of Kyoto were the residences
of Japan's emperors for more than 1,000 years. The Buddhist Kyoto temple
is the only New7Wonders finalist made of wood, without even metal nails,
screws or bolts, and is also the only monument that is an active house
of worship. The temple is said to have been built in the honour of Kannon
Bosatsu by Enchin, a Buddhist priest. It takes its name from a waterfall
within the complex, which runs off the nearby hills. Kiyomizyu is the
main temple of the Hosso sect of Buddhism, and has been destroyed and
          rebuilt many times.
